Leveraging Technology for Better Immunization: Insights from the Latest Lancet Study

A systematic review led by the Robert Koch Institute, alongside collaborators from institutions like Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and GIZ, published in The Lancet's eBioMedicine, shows strong evidence that digital health tools improve immunization programs. The study marks a pivotal moment in understanding how Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can revolutionize vaccine delivery in low—and middle-income countries (LMICs). The study highlights the CIMA app as a key differentiator in improving vaccination return rates and redefining strategies to enhance vaccine uptake.

This blog discusses the systematic review's key findings, its implications, and how innovative tools can address vaccination challenges.

The Power of Evidence: A Comprehensive Analysis (Part1)

1. Rigorous Research Methodology

  • Time frame: January 2010 to August 2023.

  • Sources: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, BMJ Health & Care Informatics.

  • Initial collection: 6,535 screened studies.

  • Final analysis: 27 studies meeting strict inclusion criteria.

  • Total reach: 354,979 children across 17 LMICs.

The Power of Evidence: A Comprehensive Analysis (Part2)

2. Focus on Population and Vaccines

  • Primary target: Children up to one year of age—full vaccination coverage by age one and the third pentavalent dose coverage rate.
  • Vaccine types: Pentavalent (Diphtheria, Pertussis (whooping cough), Tetanus, Hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)), measles-containing vaccines, PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine), and polio.
  • Geographic scope: Africa (20 studies), Asia (6 studies), and South America (1 study).
  • Special emphasis: Under-immunized and zero-dose children.

Digital Interventions: Mapping the Landscape

ICT Solutions Analyzed

    b. phone calls

  • 2. Electronic Immunization Registries (EIR)-3 studies. Including:
    a. Data management
    b. Coverage monitoring
    c. Real-time tracking

  • 3. Software tools-(3 studies). Including:
    a. Twilio cloud communications platform integration.
    b. Automated text and voice calling system.
    c. Web-based reminder platform

CIMA Care's Distinctive Achievement

CIMA Care's Distinctive Achievement

Among the reviewed interventions, CIMA Care stands out as the only solution specifically examined for vaccination return rates. Our innovative app demonstrated:

  • Increased return rates for follow-up vaccinations.
  • Improved timeliness of vaccination schedules.
  • Enhanced parent engagement and empowerment.
  • Reduction in the default rate.

Key Effectiveness Metrics

The meta-analysis of ICT impact revealed significant improvements:

  • Full immunization by age one (OR 2.61, 95% CI 1.20-5.67). This displays that children were 2.61 times more likely to get all their vaccines by their first birthday, and we can be 95% confident that they were between 1.2 and 5.67 times more likely to complete their vaccinations.

  • Pentavalent vaccine third dose coverage (OR 2.32, 95% CI 1.34-4.03). This means that children were 2.32 times more likely to get their third pentavalent shot, and we can be 95% confident that they were between 1.34 and 4.03 times more likely to get this important vaccine dose.

  • CIMA Care's specific contribution to return rates showed a 19% relative risk reduction. This indicates that for every 100 children in the vaccination program, approximately 19 fewer would be expected to have late appointments when using CIMA compared to standard care, an important improvement in vaccination timeliness achieved through the CIMA intervention.
