Empowering Child Health through Digital Innovation: The CIMA Care Approach

At a time when digital technologies are reshaping healthcare delivery, the intersection of child health, immunization, and digital innovation offers unprecedented opportunities to address global health challenges. As young people increasingly navigate a world of screens and smartphones, it's critical that we harness this digital literacy to improve health outcomes, particularly in the area of childhood immunization.

As in the Gavi Digital Health Information (DHI) Strategic Vision, the blueprint for digital health information in immunization is to create digitally transformed, integrated, equitable, gender-intentional information systems that identify and reach zero-dose and under-immunized children through improved access, quality, and efficiency to accelerate country immunization objectives. [2]

Digital Health: WHO's Vision for Global Immunization

The World Health Organization (WHO) has determined the critical role of digital health in strengthening immunization programs globally. In their Global Strategy on Digital Health 2020-2025, WHO emphasizes the importance of digital technologies in improving health service delivery, particularly for vulnerable populations. The strategy highlights how digital tools can enhance vaccine delivery by improving supply chain management, supporting health worker training, and enabling real-time monitoring of vaccine coverage. Moreover, the global strategy leverages digital technologies as adaptable public goods across various countries to enhance equitable health resource access and safeguard against misinformation, cyber threats, and human rights violations.

WHO's approach aligns closely with CIMA Care's mission, emphasizing the need for interoperable systems, data-driven decision-making, and equitable access to digital health solutions. The WHO global strategy states, 'Digital health should be an integral part of health priorities and benefit people in an ethical, safe, secure, reliable, equitable, and sustainable way.' This vision reinforces the importance of initiatives like CIMA Care in leveraging digital innovation to improve child health outcomes worldwide. [3]

Harnessing Digital Literacy for Child Health

  • The Africa Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention's digital strategy emphasizes the critical role of digital technologies in ensuring timely, valid, and complete public health surveillance data. This approach is essential for effective planning, priority setting, and healthcare decision-making. [1]
  • Similarly, CIMA Care's digital platform supports the goals of the African CDC by improving childhood immunization rates, streamlining data management, and providing tools to analyze and visualize immunization coverage. The tools can help healthcare providers enable effective, evidence-based planning and decision-making.
  • In addition, CIMA Care's approach aligns with the Africa CDC's collaborative strategy. Africa CDC has adopted a co-creation approach with over 75 partner organizations, [1] and CIMA Care actively engages with local health authorities, clinics, and communities. This multi-stakeholder engagement ensures that digital solutions are culturally sensitive and tailored to local needs.
  • CIMA Care's approach also aligns with Gavi’s effort to prioritize digital health interventions, including geospatial applications for identifying the children who missed their appointments and real-time planning and monitoring of immunizations. Additionally, as part of our upcoming initiatives, we are actively developing plans to implement a comprehensive digital supply chain information system in the near future. [2]

Leveraging Digital Affinity for Immunization

  • As Sarah Neggazi, Chair of Public Health at the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation, points out, 'Young people are already digitally literate and open to using technologies for a range of health habits and concerns.' At the time, young people are bound to leverage digital health benefits; this digital native status presents a unique opportunity to engage young parents and children in health-promoting behaviors, including adherence to immunization schedules. [1]
  • CIMA Care's mobile application and tools leverage this digital affinity, providing automated vaccination reminders, vaccination history, and educational content to parents. By doing so, we not only ensure timely immunizations and help healthcare providers maintain accurate recording and management of vaccination but also address vaccine hesitancy through evidence-based information delivered directly to smartphones—a device that many young parents have at hand.
  • The CIMA Care app and dashboards align with Gavi’s priority of effective data use, enabling improved data integration, dashboards, visualization, and mechanisms to aid decision-making at the local level. [2]
  • Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, also emphasizes strengthening routine immunization programs as a foundation for primary health care and global health security. She states, 'Strengthening the ability of countries to administer routine vaccines therefore not only has the immediate payoff of preventing illness and death caused by known preventable diseases but also lays the groundwork and the pathways for any future response.' This statement aligns perfectly with CIMA Care's mission to boost child immunization rates and improve public health systems worldwide. [1]
  • CIMA Care's approach supports Gavi's strategic focus on reaching under-immunized children, contributing to the global effort to leave no child behind with immunization. [2]

CIMA Care's Comprehensive Approach to Global Health

  • The impact of CIMA Care goes beyond improving vaccination. The CIMA Health Academy provides comprehensive online education on immunization and public health, addressing the need for continuous professional development in the rapidly evolving field of digital health. This approach not only empowers healthcare professionals but also helps build trust in immunization programs—a critical factor in increasing immunization rates. The Academy's curriculum covers various topics, from the basics of immunization programs to special considerations and prospects for immunization strategies and closing gaps.
  • Moreover, the CIMA Health Academy aligns with Gavi’s priority of building capacity for effective design, implementation, and monitoring of digital health interventions, contributing to the sustainability of these initiatives. [2]
  • In addition, CIMA Care's ecosystem approach aligns perfectly with Nishtar's (CEO of Gavi vision for strengthening health systems. She says, 'By increasing our investments in health systems and immunization, and by forging new partnerships in countries affected by fragility, conflict, and vulnerability, we can strengthen global health security and the world's resilience to outbreaks and pandemics.' [1] CIMA Care's model of engaging parents, clinics/communities, policymakers, and institutions ensures a holistic and sustainable impact on global health.
  • CIMA Care's holistic approach contributes to the global effort of coordinated support for digital health enablers, strengthening the capacity and sustainability of these interventions across different health system levels.
  • As we move forward, it's clear that putting children at the center of digital health strategies is not just beneficial—it's essential. By combining young people's digital literacy with innovative health technologies, we can create more resilient and effective immunization programs. CIMA Care is actively contributing to the digital health movement, helping to ensure that no child misses out on life-saving vaccinations and supporting a healthier, more equitable vaccination for all.
  • As Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, concludes, 'By putting immunization at the heart of how we build resilience to health emergencies, we can ensure a healthier and safer future for all.' [3] CIMA Care represents this vision, leveraging digital innovation to empower child health and build stronger, more resilient health systems worldwide.
  • Through its comprehensive approach, CIMA Care contributes to the global outcomes of increased catalytic investment in digital health, scaled and integrated priority interventions, and improved programming and decision-making for reaching under-immunized children.
